Remove wall containers from faux wall panels, including switchboards and plug coatings. Use a soap-and-water solution to remove dirt and gravel from panels. Remove old staples and nails from the wood panel, using a hammer for the nails and a small chisel to dig old staples. Check the edges of panels to make sure you have removed the nails. Hammer down nails and staples that you can have hard to remove.

Use a wall joint to fill in holes from removing staples and nails. Allow the compound to dry before proceeding to the next step. Gently remove panels to remove wax or other pre-finish. Use a dust vacuum or dust cloth to pick up residual dust during grinding. Use a brush previously used for oil-based paint to apply the stain to two or three vertical slots of panels, then even apply the stain to the boards adjacent to the painted grooves. Use old rags to wipe colored boards. Continue applying the stain to two or three tracks at a time and follow up through staining adjacent boards. Wipe of colored discs. Work as quickly as possible until you have the entire wall or room. Wait until the stain dries before changing furniture and faux wall panels decorations.
